The UNESCO chair “Ecologically safe development of a large region – the Volga basin” established in 1997 at the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering participates constantly in international UNESCO projects. The most meaningful among them are: “Sustainable development of great rivers basins. A demonstration project for the basins of the Volga river and the Caspian sea” (The Volga-Caspian sea) resulted in working out a science-based forecast of the Volga basin development till 2030 (The Volga Vision), “CABRI-Volga. Cooperation Along a Big River: Institutional coordination among stakeholders for environmental risk management in the Volga basin”, “Development of ecologically safe technologies of waste treatment”, “Study and preservation of constructions by engineer Shukhov in the Nizhny Novgorod region” within the framework of which a masterpiece of the great engineer – a unique 128-meter hyperboloid multisection tower, a former NiGRES power transmission tower, has been salvaged and restored. The international project “A world network of the Orthodox centres of Seraphim of Sarov” is a unique one by its importance and information content. As a coordinator and participant, the chair takes part in the Federal project “Ilinskaya sloboda” (Zapochaine), one of the results of which was construction of a new ensemble, the Square of People’s Unity. The square has become symbolic in Russia with a monument of the heroes of the Nizhny Novgorod militia – Kuzma Minin and prince Dmitry Pozharsky.

The chair is the initiator and one of the permanent organizers of the International scientific and industrial forum “Great Rivers” held annually in Nizhny Novgorod. The 17th Great Rivers forum held in May 2015 was dedicated to the UNESCO’s 70th anniversary. To highlight the jubilee, a special attention on the forum was paid to the theme “Russia in the space of the UNESCO world heritage”.

The scientific seminar “Environment and human security” works regularly at the chair. The chair is a basic platform for developing solutions of and scenarios on the sustainable ecologically safe development of regions, generalization and promotion of UNESCO’s and other international institutions’ good practices in the region.

The chair’s priority innovation scientific areas are: “Development of resources-saving technologies of drinking water purification for the population of large territories”, “Assessment of natural-economic complexes’ vulnerability and mitigation of risk of natural and man-caused disasters and negative impacts”, “Study, conservation and popularization of the unique constructions by engineer V.G. Shukhov and their preparation for nomination to the World Heritage List”, “Solution of tasks of resources-saving and rational nature management by means of development of complex technologies of industrial wastewater treatment and utilization of treated wastewaters and obtained biogas and sludge. Development of technologies of anaerobic microbiologic conversion of organic wastes to produce biogas and organic-mineral fertilizers”, “Study of unique karst territories of the Volga basin as a part of the world system of nature heritage to solve problems of their sustainable development”, “Organization and active participation in an international dialogue in European space – interference and interpenetration of cultures”.

Special attention is paid to the UNESCO chair’s practice in the development of interactive information systems of monitoring environment quality in the Volga basin.
