Great Rivers

The International scientific and industrial forum "Great Rivers" (ICEF), dedicated to sustainable development of countries and nations located in the world great river basins, is the event of a global scale. Since 1999 the Forum has been held annually in May in Nizhny Novgorod.

The world great rivers play significant role in evolution of civilizations on the Planet Earth; like life-giving arteries they nourish natural ecosystems and economical activities of people. Human well-being and existence on the Planet depend on their ecological condition. The problem of ecological recovery of great river basins is broadly viewed at the Forum, attention being focused equally on political, social, economic and ecological issues. High emphasis is placed on the problems of preservation of historical heritage.

The organizers of the first forums "Great Rivers" were the Government of the Russian Federation, UNESCO, Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Industry, Science and Technologies of the Russian Federation, Russian Academy for Architecture and Construction Sciences (RAACS), Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, Roshydromet, Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Fuel and Energy of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, State Committee for Construction and Housing Complex, Association "Big Volga", Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and All-Russia JSC "Nizhegorodskaya yarmarka". The UNESCO Chair of NNGASU takes active part in organization and conducting of all scientific congresses of the Forum.

The main goals of the International scientific and industrial forum "Great Rivers" are:

  • Generalization of the world's experience in solution of problems of sustainable development and ecological recovery of world's great river basins, creation of new forms of international and interregional partnerships for solving global and local problems in regulation of impacts upon environment;
  • Analysis of contemporary progress in application of basins' principle in solutions of sustainable development issues, that include elaboration of effective legal, normative and economic mechanisms for administration of socio-economic development in great river basins;
  • Introduction of best practices of countries and nations in different fields of socio-economic development.

Every year representatives of more than 20 countries and several International organizations (UNESCO, MIO, UN University, etc.) and over 40 subjects of the Russian Federation participate in the Forum. About 300 enterprises and organizations take part in the Forum’s exhibitions. At 12 sections of the scientific congress of the Forum scientists from all over the world present results of their recent researches and discuss progress of their joint projects.
