Seminar “Environment and human security”

The first seminar “Social vulnerability as a component of risk assessment” was held at the UNESCO Chair on September 16, 2005.

The seminar was attended by specialists of NNGASU, representatives of EMERCOM in Nizhny Novgorod and the Upper Volga Territorial Department for Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring.

Modern concepts of and approaches to risk and vulnerability assessment were addressed at the seminar. Research results on methods of quantitative assessment of vulnerability obtained by the UNU-EHS Cooperation unit at NNGASU were presented during the seminar.

The second seminar was held at NNSUACE on December 6, 2005. The themes of the seminar were “The problem of waterworks safety and territories flooding during high water period” and “Development of an interactive information system for risk analysis, environment security management and emergency situations prevention on administrative territories and in river basins”. The seminar was attended by specialists of NNSUACE, UNU-EHS, EMERCOM Nizhny Novgorod Regional Department, the Emergency Situations Monitoring and Forecast Centre of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the Upper Volga Territorial Department for Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring, the Monitoring and Information Department of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Committee for Nature Conservation and Management.

The seminar addressed the following issues:

• assessment of waterworks safety;
• methods of forecast of flooding zones in the Volga valley by high waters of different exceedance probability (based on the Volga-Rhine project);
• experience of development of the ATLAS interactive information system in South Africa;
• possibilities and necessary conditions for creating a pilot information system on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
