STEP 4. CHECK YOUR BANK CARD
When you arrive in Russia, you will immediately need money for transportation costs and food.
In restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, supermarkets and trains, you can use VISA or Mastercard bank cards.
IMPORTANT!
Within 1-2 days from the moment of arrival, until the university staff puts you on registration at the place of study, you will not have a passport, which means that you will not be able to open a bank account and buy a SIM card.
STEP 5. GET TO NIZHNY NOVGOROD
Upon arrival at the Russian border control zone, you must have all the necessary documents (passport, visa) with you in case an employee of the migration service asks you to show them. You will be given a migration card, which must be submitted to the University along with all other necessary documents for registration.
You can get from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod by plane. The ticket price is 4500-5500 rubles (about 80 US dollars). The journey time is 55 minutes. Take a close look at the departure airport. Please note that there are several airports in Moscow that are far from each other. Usually, planes fly to Nizhny Novgorod from Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports.
If you decide to get to Nizhny Novgorod by train, you will have to go to the Kursky railway station or the Yaroslavsky railway station in Moscow or the Locomotive station (Cherkizovo). To do this, it is best to use a taxi. The cost can be different – from 500 to 3000 rubles. You can also use Aeroexpress trains. But in this case, you will also have to get to the train station by metro.
High-speed trains "Lastochka" and "Strizh" leave for Nizhny Novgorod almost every three to four hours. The journey time is three to four hours. The ticket price (depending on the time of purchase) is 1000-2500 rubles. Full information about the train schedule and fare can be found on the website https://www.rzd.ru/.
STEP 6. GET TO THE HOSTEL
If you arrived by plane, please note that the distance from Nizhny Novgorod airport to the hostel is approximately 20 km. You will need money to order a taxi to the university dormitory in case you are not met by representatives of the university. The cost of the trip will be approximately 385-500 rubles. You will need to specify the address: Strigino Airport-31 Timiryazev Street (university dormitory).
If you arrived in Nizhny Novgorod by train, upon arrival at the Moskovsky railway station in Nizhny Novgorod, order a taxi, specifying the address in the application: Moskovsky railway station-Timiryazev str., 31.
From the train station, you can get to the university dormitory by buses 26 or 43, stop "Lyadov Square".
If you arrive at the hostel in the evening or at night, you will be met by the hostel staff. You will need to show them your passport. They will show you the room where you will live until you receive a medical certificate-confirmation that you are healthy.

STEP 7. REPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY
STEP 7.1. ISSUE DOCUMENTS FOR MIGRATION REGISTRATION
On the day of arrival or the next day (exception: weekends), you must report to the CIRC of the university with the following documents:
- original passport with visa;
- the original migration card marked " STUDY";
- notarized translation of documents and passport into Russian.
IMPORTANT!
All foreign citizens must submit documents to the university within 3 days after crossing the border of the Russian Federation. In case of late registration – a fine of 5000-7000 rubles and deportation from the Russian Federation.
All foreign students must renew their student visa (registration) 45 days before the end of its term!
STEP 7.2. SUBMIT THE DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY
When applying to the university for bachelor's, master's, postgraduate programs, it is necessary to provide:
- original passport;
- originals of educational documents;
- notarized translations of educational documents and passports into Russian;
- the result of the examination of foreign educational documents.

When applying to the university for pre-university training programs, you must provide:

STEP 7.3. APPLY FOR MEDICAL INSURANCE
Upon arrival at the university, the staff of the international service will assist you in obtaining medical insurance and other documents necessary for admission to the university.
The cost of insurance is approximately 7,000-8,000 rubles. It gives you the right to issue a medical certificate on the state of health, urgent medical care, medical assistance from specialists.
STEP 7.4. PASS THE ENTRANCE TESTS
IMPORTANT!
Foreign citizens entering the master's degree programs pass the entrance exam in August. Applicants for bachelor's degree programs take entrance exams in July. You can get acquainted with the exam program and approximate test dates on the NNGASU website: https://www.nngasu.ru/Abitur/.
Foreign citizens arriving at the university to study under pre-university training programs are accepted for training without exams.

General information about the city
The city of Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Grand Duke George Vsevolodovich.
Nizhny Novgorod is located 400 km east of Moscow.
Area of the territory: 46,000 hectares.
Nizhny Novgorod is the center and the largest city of the Volga Federal District, the administrative center of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The city is located at the confluence of two large rivers – the Oka and the Volga. In the period from 1932 to 1990, the city was named Gorky (in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky).
Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth most populous city in Russia, it is home to almost 1.3 million people.
In the period from 1959 to 1991, the city was closed to foreigners, but now it is the largest center of river cruise tourism in Russia and a venue for international exhibitions of various profiles on the basis of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair.

Money
The monetary unit of Russia is the ruble. One ruble – 100 kopecks. Coins come in 10 kopecks, 50 kopecks, 1 ruble, 2 rubles, 5 rubles and 10 rubles. Paper bills – 10 rubles, 50 rubles, 100 rubles, 200 rubles, 500 rubles, 1000 rubles, 2000 rubles and 5000 rubles. In Russia, it is forbidden to pay in foreign currency in stores.
You can use VISA or Mastercard bank cards. Such cards as UnionPay, NETS are not accepted by most Russian banks, so it will be extremely difficult to withdraw cash or simply make a payment in a supermarket.
You can exchange euros or US dollars at the exchange offices of banks.
IMPORTANT!
Your passport is almost always required at currency exchange offices. Therefore, make sure to exchange money even before you give your passport to the university staff for registration. Never exchange money on the street. The people who offer to do this are at best suspicious individuals.
If you want to use a bank card of your country, please contact your bank and make sure that this card is compatible with ATMs in Russia. It would be good to notify your bank about the upcoming trip so that your card is not blocked.
Banks
The largest Russian banks are Sberbank, Alfabank and VTB.
Each of these banks has mobile applications that are very convenient to work with. We advise you to apply for a Sberbank card, because you will make all payments at the university through this bank. In addition, it has a huge number of offices and ATMs. There are offices near the university (4 Maxim Gorky Square) and near the hostel (38 Belinsky Street). Sberbank
ATMs work around the clock. Sberbank's ATM is located in the main building of the University at the address: 65 Ilyinskaya Street.
Hostel
The NNGASU Hostel is located in the city center. The main street – Bolshaya Pokrovskaya-can be reached in 10 minutes on foot. Near the hostel there are shops, a market, a large shopping center. You can walk to the university from the hostel in 15 minutes.
Mobile communication
You can buy a mobile phone in Russia in communication salons or home appliance stores located in shopping centers. The cost of a smartphone starts from 3000 rubles.
As a rule, mobile operators offer a package of services for a month. The minimum cost of such a package of services is about 250 rubles. You can top up your account at an ATM, in a mobile application, or with an operator. Make sure that you have checked the cost of the tariff for both Russian and international calls!
The nearest communication salons are located in the NEBO shopping center, a 10-minute walk from the hostel, on Lyadov Square, opening hours: from 10.00 to 22.00.
All major cellular companies offer wireless Internet.
Mail-Post Office
The usual opening hours are from Monday to Friday from 09: 00 to 18: 00, on Saturday from 09: 00 to 15: 00, but everything depends on the post office. The cost of a postal item depends on the weight, size and type of service requested. Remember that postal delivery can take from 1 to 3 weeks, it depends on the distance of the region. Delivery to another country may take about a month.
Recently, all students use special delivery services. In this case, you will need to specify the address of the university dormitory, the attendants will receive the parcel or bring it directly to your room.
There are many international companies in Nizhny Novgorod that provide cargo delivery: DHL, UPS or FEDEX. The courier can be ordered online. Delivery of documents and parcels by such international companies is usually much faster than by traditional mail.

Taxi
Taxi in Nizhny Novgorod is quite an affordable and convenient form of transport. In order to call a taxi, it is better to call an official company or use the smartphone app. After you call the operator and tell the address of the location, you will receive a text message with the number, color and brand of the taxi. In addition, you will find out the price of your trip. Then, when your taxi arrives, an answering machine will call you. In the Center of Nizhny Novgorod, the price for a taxi is about 100-300 rubles, depending on the direction. You can drive from our University campus to the train station for 100 rubles.

It is much more convenient to call a taxi through smartphone apps: Uber, Gettaxi, Yandex Taxi or Rutaxi (Lucky).
Public transport
Buses in Nizhny Novgorod can be of two types: municipal buses (the bus number begins with the letter A, for example, A16) and commercial minibuses (the number begins with the letter T, for example, T81). Residents of Russia call commercial minibuses minibuses. Usually there is a conductor in the bus cabin. If there is no conductor, the driver accepts the payment. You can pay for the trip in cash, by bank card or by a special transport card. The cost of travel in municipal buses is 28 rubles when paying in cash and 26 rubles when paying with cards. The fare in minibuses is 30 rubles.
Metro
The Nizhny Novgorod Metro is an underground train system that includes 16 stations throughout the city. Trains run every 5 minutes. To use the metro, you need to buy a token at the ticket office, its cost does not depend on the number of stops. To get to the trains, you need to insert the token into the subway turnstile, which is located to your right, wait for the green light, go through the turnstile and go down the escalator or stairs. The nearest metro station to the University is Gorkovskaya.
Shops, restaurants, entertainment
The NEBO shopping Center, the closest to the hostel and the university, is a 10-minute walk from the University - on Lyadov Square, it is open from 10:00 to 22:00. In the supermarket "Perekrestok", which is located in the shopping center on the ground floor, you can buy food, basic necessities, tableware (spoons, pots, pans), towels, slippers. It also sells ready-made food.
There are several small shops near the University dormitory, where basic food and cosmetics are sold. Most shops are open from 09:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and weekends. Traditionally, in supermarkets "Pyaterochka", "Perekrestok", "Magnet" prices are more affordable.
There are many shopping centers and department stores in Nizhny Novgorod. In addition to the NEBO shopping center located near the hostel, you can visit shops, cafes, restaurants in other major shopping centers.

Markets
If you want to visit the markets, then one of them is located next to the hostel on the territory of the Nebo shopping center.
If you want to buy products cheaper, you can visit the Central Market. It is located at 3 Chkalov Street. It works from 7-00 to 18-00.
Personal security
Nizhny Novgorod is usually a very safe place. However, follow the usual safety rules in a big city:
- avoid night walks;
- always have copies of your passport, visa and registration with you;
- go to a bar, club or party together with at least one friend;
- do not react to verbal insults and various offers;
- avoid clashes with drunk people in bars or on the streets;
- use official taxi services;
- do not flaunt money or jewelry.
Pickpocketing is rare, but it is not excluded in crowded buses or streets. Keep an eye on your things!
- when traveling, always keep your documents, money and credit cards with you;
- try not to go home to strangers;
- avoid the use of prohibited substances in Russia (drugs). It is not worth taking risks, because it is punishable;
- beware of people in bars offering you alcoholic beverages at their expense.

The distribution, production, sale and use of narcotic drugs are violations of the law in Russia.
The age of consent for sexual relations is 18 years. If you have sexual relations with a person under the age of 18, you will be legally responsible.

Attitude to foreigners
Nizhny Novgorod used to be closed to foreigners, and some locals are still curious about those who look different, although with the arrival of an increasing number of foreign students, this has become less common. But in any case, do not walk late at night, behave with restraint in public places.
Medicines
The availability of medical insurance will allow you to seek medical help if necessary. After the consultation, the doctor will give you a prescription for buying the necessary medicines. By prescription, you can buy medicines at any pharmacy. If you need to buy a medicine that you have taken in your country, then you need to know the Latin name of this drug or bring the package of your drug with you. Some medications, for example, for headaches or symptoms of respiratory viral diseases, can be purchased without a prescription.
